Registering / Deregistering

After moving to Zurich you have to register within 8 days at the municipality of your district. You will have to bring your passport and lease contract. Additionally, a copy of your diploma, a work contract and/or a conformation letter by your employee may be required. The registration fee is 20 CHF. An additional 65 CHF per year will be charged for the residence permit ("Ausländerausweis"). Payment is due once you receive the document, which usually takes between one and three months.

If you change your address, please note that in addition to registering you may have to deregister your old address. The registration fee (20 CHF) will apply again. Additionally, you may be charged an additional 65 CHF again, depending on the district you move to (or come from) - irrespective of the validity of your residence permit. This is especially true if you move to or from a district outside the city of Zurich (e.g. Dietikon).

If you leave Switzerland for good, you have to deregister at the "Stadthaus" ("Kreisbüro 1"), irrespective of your current address.
